Carmel Girls’ High School, Hazaribag, Jharkhand
Carmel Girls’ High School, Hazaribag a Hindi Medium School, is affiliated to Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC), Ranchi and is situated on Ranchi Patna road.
The children come from the town belonging to lower middle class. The institution has maintained a good standard and has tried to fulfill the educational needs of the locality.
It was Mgr. Sevrin DD, the Bishop of Ranchi, who welcomed the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel formally to the Diocese and gave them his wholehearted support and blessings. Thus the Convent opened on 15 June, 1949, under the patronage of St. Joseph, as a filial house of Avila Convent. The School was opened on 14 July, 1949, with 37 students with English as the medium of instruction and was named Mount Carmel School as desired by Mother Sylvia our Superior General. Initially there was English medium up to class 10 and all the students appeared for their Bihar Board Matric Examinations.
In order to send the students up for the Board examinations the management applied for recognition from the Govt. of Bihar. To make it easy and possible to get recognition, a parallel Hindi section in the High School was introduced in January 1970 by the Headmistress, Sr. Alcidia A.C. and Superior Sr. Lucia A.C.
In 1973 the Hindi school received permission of establishment through letter no.51207-9 dated 23-8-1973. In 1976 the school received the long awaited recognition and permanent affiliation through letter no.27974-80 dated 10-7-1976.
The first batch of English as well as Hindi medium students appeared for Matric Examinations from the school in the year 1978. Due to non- availability of text books and other course materials in English from the Bihar Board and because of the difficulty in getting competent teachers the English section in the high school was phased out in 1986 and the High School was only a full fledged Hindi medium school with two sections each from classes VI to X till 1997. After due consideration, class VI was opened in 1998 with English Medium and sisters opted for CISCE.
Once the English Medium was upgraded, Hindi Medium continued with one section each from classes VI-X. Carmel Girls’ High School, Hazaribag, received the MINORITY declaration from the Government of Bihar on 28/06/1978 letter no.21576-677. Thereafter almost all the batches sent up for the board examinations, secured 100% results.
In the year 2000 when the Jharkhand was bifurcated from Bihar, the school came under Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC), Ranchi.
