Carmel School, Bokaro Thermal, Jharkhand

Carmel School Bokaro Thermal was founded on 7 January 1955 at the invitation of the D.V.C. It is affiliated to The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, (CISCE) New Delhi. It is under the religious jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hazaribag.

When the historic decision to establish an English Medium School in Bokaro was put forward by Mr. A.N. Lahiri, the then Chief Engineer, DVC to Fr. Verbracken SJ, the visiting priest and Mr. Chapman an American, it was a small step towards a big cause. ‘It was a golden opportunity, not to be lost’ were the words of Mother Theodosia, who founded this worthy institution, thus Mount Carmel Convent was born officially on January 7 1955 and the School a fortnight later. She, along with 5 other sisters, was the pioneer of this establishment. To begin with, the sisters resided in the three room cottage, which had been the home of one of the labourers and were excited at the thought of teaching in a tent school.

A very significant day was 14 September 1956, when an agreement took place between the Apostolic Carmel and the DVC, making over 15 acres of land to the institution on lease, for the purpose of accommodating the growing numbers in the school. The school’s recognition was received on 30 May, 1973. The school was declared a minority school in April, 1978. The Carmel Hindi School and English medium Primary School functioned in the same building up to 1988. The foundation stone of the Carmel School was laid in September 1988 and Sister Mirabelle, the then Provincial Superior lit the lamp & declared the school building open. The move was initiated to affiliate the school to the ICSE Board, New Delhi. The Jharkhand Govt. issued the NOC in April, 2003 and the Board granted temporary affiliation in March 2005. Carmel English Medium Primary school was thus upgraded into a co-education High School. The first batch of 32 students were sent up for the Board examination in 2005 and obtained cent per cent results. The school has now obtained permanent affiliation from the CISCE in July, 2013.

Carmel School has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 1955. This School though, Catholic, is open to girls and boys of all castes and creeds. Carmel School being a co-educational institution, has been giving equal importance to both boys and girls. Students are nurtured to respect one another regardless of gender differences.
