Carmel School, Hazaribag, Jharkhand
Carmel School is a Christian Minority School established and is administered by the Apostolic Carmel Education Society of Bihar/Jharkhand. Carmel School, Hazaribag was opened on 14 July, 1949. It celebrated the Diamond Jubilee in 2009.
Things moved fast as Mother Theodosia, Superior of Avila Convent, brought 6 Sisters who were appointed to form the community and to begin the mission at Hazaribag. They were Sisters Rita (the Superior) Bernice, Digna, Hilda, Angelica, and Jacintha. The Convent opened on 15 June, 1949, under the patronage of St. Joseph, as a filial house of Avila Convent. Four more sisters joined the community on 5 July. They were Sisters Berchmans and Bernadette for the College and Sisters Bernita and Celisa for the School. In December 1949, the convent became a filial house of the Institute, and came under the direct management of the Superior General.
It was Mother Sylvia’s decision to name the school as Mount Carmel School. The school was opened on 14 July, 1949, with 37 students, with English as the medium of instruction. Classes in English were started on 1 July to prepare the students for the English medium. The sisters and the school had a Church building surrounded by a large compound with many trees, including fruit trees. There was a Parochial House with 7 good rooms, a kitchen and adjoining rooms. There was a school block of five classrooms, a garage and a house. The sisters occupied the parochial house and Classes I – V were housed in the School Block. In September of the same year, the sisters shifted to the Church building, while the other half of the Church building continued to be used for other services. Two rooms were added to the front portion of the church.
However, when many English medium schools started mushrooming in the town in the 1990s, the parents and guardians, as well as the students put pressure on the management, to upgrade the English medium Primary School. After due consideration, Class VI was opened in 1998 with the English Medium. This section was upgraded and the first batch of 32 students appeared for their (ICSE) Examinations in the year 2003. The school secured 100 per cent pass results. The school received the much needed ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, in the year 2004 and the school also received its minority declaration certificate from the Government of India on 20 November, 2007.
All the batches sent up for the ICSE Board Examinations have secured excellent results (98 – 100 per cent). During 2003 – 2005, Carmel students appeared from Carmel School, Digwadih and from 2006 onwards from Carmel School itself. At present, the school is an English medium school from KG, I to X.
