Carmel Convent, Bhagalpur - 1964
Carmel Convent, Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur ‘The Silk City’ is historically, culturally, geographically as well as politically very important.

Carmel Convent, Bhagalpur was the blue –eyed baby of the Apostolic Carmel Sisters. The Provincial from America of the TOR mission was quite interested in the educational work and earnestly requested Sister Theodosia to make an appeal on his behalf, for an A.C foundation at Bhagalpur. This same appeal was echoed by both Monsignor Macgarry and Fr. Marin, the TOR Superior and Parish Priest.

The then Superior General, Mother Sylvia gave her approval for the new Foundation at Bhagalpur. It was undertaken by the Superior of Patna, Mother Honorine. She generously undertook to help the institute in the new venture and supplied the new convent generously with all that was necessary to build the new convent. At first the house that was given to the sisters belonged to the Corty family. The TOR Fathers’ had acquired it from them

Mother Honorine accompanied the pioneers - Sister Adela in charge, Sister Frederica and Sister Fabiana. The community started with three sisters.

On 23 June, 1958, the foundation was laid of the convent and school. A very important day in the history of Carmel began when the community was shifted to the new house at Barari, Bhagalpur, on 17 March, 1964. The old house was given back to the TOR fathers.

In 1983, Carmel Convent, celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the foundation in Bhagalpur. Carmel Convent, Bhagalpur stepped into the golden years of its long journey on 23 June, 2008. To mark this occasion many dignitaries were invited. We had the privilege of the gracious presence of the Governor of Bihar, Dr. R.S. Gavai, and Rt. Rev. Bishop Kurien V. of Bhagalpur. Many sisters and fathers from the local communities, and province were present.

By Divine Providence Carmel Convent, Bhagalpur, is going to reach the milestone of 60 years. We thank God for all the pioneers and stalwarts of the Convent and School, for their selfless and dedicated services to the Church in Bhagalpur and the Society at large.

The sisters thus continue to experience the presence of God through prayer and carry on the charism of the Congregation, through education and other works of mercy.
